A complete tile set
Look for an American Mahjong set with 152 tiles, including jokers, plus four racks and dice.
The star of the tableThe absolute beginner’s guide
Four friends, one colorful table, and absolutely no pressure. Here’s everything you need to host a warm, wonderful American Mahjong night at home.
Think rummy—but with beautiful tiles, a shared annual card, and a few delightfully social twists.
Players take turns drawing and discarding tiles while building one of the hands printed on the current National Mah Jongg League card. Jokers add flexibility, the Charleston lets everyone pass tiles before play, and calling “Mah Jongg!” is every bit as fun as it sounds.
Good to know: American Mahjong is its own version of the game. If a friend learned Chinese, Japanese, or another style, some rules will feel different—and that’s perfectly normal.

Good company matters most. These four things handle the rest.

Questions welcomeReady, set, shuffle
No white gloves required. A little breathing room and a comfortable chair go a long way.
Clear the tabletop, add four chairs, and keep snacks on a nearby sideboard so crumbs stay away from the tiles.
Place one rack and one current card at each side. Set coasters within easy reach and add a small dish for dice.
Turn all tiles face down and mix. Each player makes a wall 19 tiles long and two tiles high, forming a square in the center.
Choose the first dealer—called East—then follow your group’s guide for the roll, break, deal, and Charleston.
Be the player everyone re-invites
Great etiquette is simple: keep the game moving, give people grace, and remember that everyone was a beginner once.
Call each discarded tile out loud so every player has a fair chance to claim it.
A steady game is lovely, but beginners deserve a moment to check the card. No rushing.
Once a tile is called or covered by the next discard, the moment has usually passed.
Offer help, not a running critique. Let each player make their own choices.
Groups vary. Agree on table rules—especially timing and Charleston details—before play.
A cheerful “Mah Jongg!” deserves applause, whether the winner is brand-new or seasoned.
